QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Finance Jessica Bell (University–Rosedale) and Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Catherine Fife (Waterloo), are responding to today’s Financial Accountability Office (FAO) report, which shows rising unemployment, deeper deficits, and new risks to Ontario’s economy.
“Unemployment is projected to rise to nearly 8% next year which is the highest level in a decade outside the pandemic,” said Bell. “That means thousands more Ontarians out of work and families left wondering how they will pay the bills. These are not just numbers in a report. This is about people’s livelihoods and security.”
“The FAO is also clear that Ontario will be hit harder by U.S. tariffs than any other province,” said Fife. “Crucial sectors like auto, steel, forestry and manufacturing are especially vulnerable, yet this government has not a single plan to shield jobs or support workers.”
“Ontario needs stability, not excuses,” added Bell. “Families deserve a government that puts them first, with real investments in housing, health care, education, and all industries that drive our economy. That is how we create opportunity and protect good jobs.”
“New Democrats know that Ontario can do better,” added Fife. “That means investing strategically to keep good jobs here at home, strengthening local procurement so Ontario businesses benefit first, and supporting the industries and communities that are being squeezed the hardest. That is how we build a stronger economy and a more secure future for every single person in the province.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
