NDP: While Alberta and Quebec are building homes, Ontario is falling behind

TORONTO — Ontario NDP MPP Jessica Bell (University–Rosedale) released the following statement in response to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s monthly housing starts report:

“The housing crisis has impacted communities across Canada, but while other provinces have found solutions and built the homes people need, Ontario has only fallen behind. After six of Ford, housing is less affordable than ever, and too many of our neighbours have been left outside in the cold.

It’s time we had a government gets back in the business of building homes. That’s what New Democrats will deliver.”

Quick Facts:

  • Ontario’s urban housing starts are down 17% from 2023, compared to a 30% increase in Quebec and 35% increase in Alberta
  • Monthly housing starts in Montréal (143%) and Vancouver (52%) for November 2024 increased significantly over November 2023, while remaining flat in Toronto.
