Ford’s corporate bailouts fail to make housing more affordable

OTTAWA CENTRE — Following reports on a proposed GTA rental housing initiative, NDP Shadow Minister for Housing, MPP Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) released the following statement, raising concerns about affordability, transparency, and the use of public funds to support private developers instead of building truly affordable housing.

“Ontarians are being asked to foot the bill to bail out corporate developers, instead of making housing truly affordable,” said MPP McKenney. “Why are we using public money to bail out private investors that will not result in delivering rents that many of us can afford?

“If government is going to invest public funds, it should be building and acquiring homes directly through a Homes Ontario model: creating permanently affordable housing, not guaranteeing profits for private investors.”
